A significant strategic collaboration with OpenAI has been announced by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.,the world leader in serving science, with the goal of enhancing its proven growth strategy through the deep integration of artificial intelligence across all operations.
The primary goal of this partnership is to dramatically improve the speed and success of drug development, ultimately enabling customers to bring new medicines to patients both faster and more cost-effectively. Thermo Fisher plans to embed OpenAI APIs into crucial areas of its business—including product development, service delivery, customer engagement, and operational efficiency—focusing broadly on accelerating scientific innovation, enhancing internal productivity, and reducing external complexity for customers.
A key initial focus area is the company's industry-leading PPD™ clinical research business, where deploying OpenAI's advanced capabilities is expected to significantly improve the cycle time of clinical trials, thereby accelerating the overall time to market for new medicines and creating meaningful industry value.
Furthermore, the collaboration will leverage AI to help customers more quickly identify therapies that are unlikely to succeed, allowing them to efficiently redirect critical investment and resources toward more promising opportunities. AI will also be integrated directly into Thermo Fisher’s end-to-end Accelerator™ Drug Development solution, which spans early development, clinical research, manufacturing, and commercialization, to deliver greater speed, simplicity, and scalability. Internally, the company is launching ChatGPT Enterprise to its colleagues to promote confidence and fluency with these powerful frontier AI tools. Chairman, President, and CEO Marc Casper emphasized that AI is shaping the future of science and, combined with their mission, serves as a powerful catalyst for scientific advancement, building an ecosystem for breakthroughs. Similarly, OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap noted that the direct integration of frontier AI into Thermo Fisher workflows will help cut through complexity, speed up breakthroughs, and bring real impact to patients' lives.
